Ardennes Hiking and Cycling

The countryside around Bastogne is classic Belgian Ardennes: rolling forested hills, small rivers running through valleys, and scattered villages connected by winding roads. The region is well set up for walkers and cyclists, with waymarked trails of varying lengths radiating out from the town. The landscape takes on a particular character in autumn, when the beech and oak forests turn golden, and in winter, when snow settles on the same terrain where soldiers fought in December 1944.

Several walking routes follow historical significance as well as scenic value — paths through the forest outside town pass through areas where the 101st Airborne Division held the perimeter during the siege. The Belgian cycling network (RAVeL) connects Bastogne to other Ardennes towns via traffic-free routes. Mountain biking is popular in the area. For a longer outing, the Liège–Bastogne–Liège cycling route (covering some of the course of the famous spring classic) can be ridden over one or two days.
