Outside Liège lies the village of Blegny, where visitors can explore the grounds of a former coal mine. The Liège area thrived on coal mining and metallurgy in the 19th century; now all the mines are closed. At Blegny you can visit the old mine buildings, watch an audiovisual presentation on the history of coal mining in the region, and descend into the underground mine pits with a former coal miner as guide.
