Opéra Royal de Wallonie

Liège's opera house, one of the finest in Belgium, in a neoclassical building on the Meuse

The Opéra Royal de Wallonie is the main opera house of Liège and of the Wallonia region, housed in a neoclassical building on the Place de l'Opéra near the Meuse. The company dates from the early 19th century and has a strong tradition — the Belgian tenor Fernand Ansseau, one of the finest voices of the early recording era, was a Liège man, and the city has always taken opera seriously.

The season runs from September to June with a mix of French and Italian opera standards, occasional rarities, and productions from visiting companies. Ticket prices are reasonable by international standards. The building's foyer and staircase are worth seeing even if you're not attending a performance — check if guided tours are available during your visit.
