Hôpital Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance

About three kilometres south of the town centre, the former Premonstratensian abbey of Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance is worth a short detour. The surviving 18th-century abbey buildings — a formal baroque ensemble in pierre bleue — are imposing, and the site retains a quiet, institutional calm that connects it directly to its medieval origins. The abbey church is still accessible and contains fine decorative work.

The grounds are best visited on foot or by bike from Soignies.

A story
The site was founded in the 12th century by the Premonstratensian order. In the 18th century the abbey buildings were converted into a hospital, a function the site has served ever since — making it one of the longest continuously operating hospital sites in Belgium.
