Soignies

Small Walloon town south of Brussels, centred on the austere Romanesque Church of St. Vincent.

Soignies is a small Walloon town south of Brussels, best known for its Collegiate Church of St. Vincent — one of the finest Romanesque churches in Belgium. Built in the 10th and 11th centuries, the church is massive and austere, with thick stone walls, round arches, and an interior that has barely changed in a thousand years. It is a striking building, especially if you have been saturated with Gothic in Brussels and Bruges.

The town itself is quiet, centred on a pleasant Grand Place with a handful of cafes. Soignies sits on the edge of the blue limestone quarry region, and the local stone — pierre bleue — has been used in buildings across Belgium for centuries. It is an easy half-day trip from Brussels or Mons.
