Cenacolo Community

A drug-rehabilitation community founded in 1983 by the Italian nun Mother Elvira Petrozzi, with one of its houses on the outskirts of Medjugorje. The community has no fees, no medications, and no professional therapists; the men live a simple shared life of work, prayer, and silence.

The community welcomes visitors on Friday evenings for a meeting and dinner. Members of the house -- many of them formerly heroin addicts -- speak about their journey, sometimes in their own languages with translation. The atmosphere is direct and unguarded, and the evening is one of the more affecting things you can do in the village.
