St. James' Church

The twin-spired parish church at the centre of the village, the focal point of every pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Masses run several times a day in different languages -- Italian, English, Polish, Spanish, German, Korean -- and the schedule is posted outside the door.

The interior is plain and modern, dominated by a large statue of the Virgin behind the altar and by the stained glass behind that. The atmosphere during a packed evening service, with the multilingual prayers rising over the heads of pilgrims of every nationality, is the experience most people come for. Confessions are heard in a long row of wooden booths behind the church, each marked with the language of the priest inside.

A story
The twin-spired church was built in 1969, twelve years before the apparitions on the hill above. The parish had planned for a small congregation; instead it became the centre of one of the largest pilgrimages in Europe, and the outdoor altar behind the church now seats thousands when the inside cannot hold the crowd.
