Mt Vlašić

Mt Vlašić rises to 2,000 m above Travnik, just 30 minutes' drive from town, and offers hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The high plateau is covered in alpine meadows and scattered mountain huts, with wide views over central Bosnia on clear days. In summer the meadows are carpeted in wildflowers and the air is noticeably cooler than in the valley below.

The ski resort on the mountain is modest by European standards but functional, with a handful of runs and basic lift infrastructure. Summer use for hiking and mountain biking has grown in recent years. The road up from Travnik is paved and navigable by ordinary car. Several mountain huts serve food and drinks in season.

A story
During the Bosnian War, the Korićanske stijene cliffs on Vlašić's western face were the site of a mass killing in August 1992, when over 200 Bosniak and Croat detainees were thrown from the cliffs by Serbian forces. A memorial marks the site. The mountain's violent history during the war sits uneasily alongside its peacetime role as a ski and hiking destination.
