Sahat Kula (Clock Tower)

The Sahat Kula is an 18th-century clock tower standing 20 metres above the bazaar quarter — one of the Ottoman landmarks that gives Travnik's old town its distinctive skyline alongside the mosque minarets. Stone-built and well-preserved, it is visible from much of the old town and serves as a useful orientation point.

The tower is not open to climb but is worth pausing at for a moment — it sits at the heart of the old bazaar area where the Ottoman-era commercial streetscape is still partially intact. The surrounding lanes have craft shops, coffee houses, and the smells of grilling meat that haven't changed much in character from the town Ivo Andrić described in "Travnik Chronicles."

A story
The tower was built in the 18th century when mechanical clocks were a mark of Ottoman modernity — each major town aspired to one. The Travnik tower still functions, its mechanism replaced over the years, and chimes the hours over the bazaar as it has for over two centuries.
