Trg Slobode (Liberty Square)

The plane-tree-lined main square, the heart of Trebinje's evening korzo

The plane-tree-lined main square between the old town walls and the river, and the social heart of Trebinje. The plane trees were planted by the Austro-Hungarians in the 1880s and now form a dense green canopy under which the cafes spill out their chairs and tables for most of the year.

A statue of the poet Jovan Dučić stands at one end of the square, gazing eastward towards Hercegovačka Gračanica on the hill above (where he is now buried). The Saturday morning market fills the square with farmers from the surrounding villages selling honey, cheese, wine and the small dried figs that are a regional speciality.
