Visočica Hill (Pyramid of the Sun)

Whatever you make of the pyramid claim, the hill itself is worth the climb. The summit holds the genuine medieval ruins of the old town of Visoki, the seat of the Bosnian kings, with sweeping views over the valley and the surrounding peaks.

A path from the visitor centre at the base climbs through forest in around an hour. The "excavations" — terraces and stone slabs unearthed by the Osmanagić foundation — are clearly signposted along the way, and you can decide for yourself.

A story
In 2005, Bosnian-American businessman Semir Osmanagić declared Visočica to be a 12,000-year-old man-made step pyramid — the largest in the world. The European Association of Archaeologists called the project a 'cruel hoax', but the Bosnian government endorsed the dig and the hill is now a major destination for fringe-archaeology tourism. Mainstream geologists explain the regular shape as a flatiron — a natural product of differential erosion.
