The café inside the American University in Bulgaria's main building is open to visitors and offers one of the more unusual coffee experiences in southwestern Bulgaria: sitting among students from 30 countries, many conducting seminars or working on laptops in English, in a city that would otherwise feel fairly provincial.
The coffee is decent, the prices are student-scale, and the surroundings — a campus of 1960s-era buildings that were originally Soviet-era construction and later refurbished — are genuinely interesting. It is a good place to spend an hour if you want to understand what gives Blagoevgrad its particular character.
