Mount Hum, at 587 metres, is the highest point on Vis and the obvious destination if you have a free morning and a rental car. The summit holds a small whitewashed chapel and a stripped-down former military radar station from the Yugoslav era; the view from the top covers the central Dalmatian archipelago — Hvar, Korčula, Lastovo, Brač — and on a clear winter day Italy is visible to the west.
The road runs almost to the top via Podšpilje; the last fifteen minutes are on foot. Sunset is the time to go — the light off the surrounding islands is what people drive up for. Bring water and a torch for the descent; the rocky track is hard to negotiate in the dark.
