Bay of Mali Ston

The Bay of Mali Ston is the enclosed body of water between the Pelješac peninsula and the mainland, with Komarna on its northern shore. It is a protected nature park, famous for the best oysters in the Adriatic and a rich mussel harvest.

You can take a boat tour from Komarna or Mali Ston to visit the floating oyster farms, where farmers will pull a string of shellfish from the water, shuck it on the spot, and serve it with a glass of Pelješac white wine. Spring is the best season — the locally named "Mali Ston Oyster Day" on St Joseph's Day, 19 March, is a small but excellent annual feast.

A story
The Mali Ston oyster — Ostrea edulis, the European flat oyster — has been cultivated in these waters since Roman times and won the Grand Prix at the 1936 London World Fair. The bay's exceptional water quality, fed by freshwater karst springs, gives the oysters a distinctively sweet, mineral finish that the cultivators say is impossible to reproduce elsewhere on the Adriatic.
