Komarna

Small Dalmatian coastal village overlooking the Bay of Mali Ston and the Pelješac peninsula.

Komarna is a small village on the mainland coast of Dalmatia, in the Dubrovnik-Neretva region, directly opposite the Pelješac peninsula across the narrow Bay of Mali Ston. It sits on a hillside above a small harbour, looking across to the oyster beds that made Mali Ston and Ston famous throughout Croatia.

The village is quiet — a handful of houses, a harbour, and not much else — but its position makes it a useful base. The Pelješac Bridge, completed in 2022, connects the mainland here to the Pelješac peninsula, finally giving Croatia continuous road access to Dubrovnik without passing through Bosnia-Herzegovina.

From Komarna, the oyster towns of Ston and Mali Ston are minutes away across the water by boat or a short drive via the bridge. The walled town of Ston has the longest defensive walls in Europe after the Great Wall of China. Mostar and Medjugorje in Bosnia are accessible via the nearby border crossing for those combining Croatia with a Bosnian excursion.

Day Trips

Komarna is well placed for day trips along the coast and into Herzegovina.

Neretva River Safari — From the village of Vid, 25 km north, you can take a ride on traditional flat-bottomed boats (trupica or lađa) through the Neretva delta wetlands. Most trips include a tasting of local specialities: frogs, eels, dried figs, and homemade grappa.

Ston — Half an hour south. The 5.5 km of medieval walls are the second longest in Europe after the Great Wall. Ston is also famous for its oysters — eat them fresh at the waterfront.

Dubrovnik — An hour's drive south. The walled old town needs no introduction.

Mostar — 65 km inland in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The UNESCO-listed Old Bridge and the Ottoman old town are the highlights. Try ćevapčići while you are there.

Getting There

Komarna sits on the E65 coast road between Split and Dubrovnik, about 120 km south of Split and 70 km north of Dubrovnik. From Zagreb or Rijeka, take the highway toward Split, exit at Šestanovac, and follow the coast road south through Makarska.

The closest airport is Dubrovnik (Čilipi), about 90 km to the south.

Things To Do

Komarna itself is a couple of streets, a harbour, and a beach — pleasant, quiet, and not the reason most people come. The bay, the bridge, and the oyster towns are the draw.

A typical day combines a swim from the village harbour, a boat ride to the oyster farms in the Bay of Mali Ston, and a long lunch in Mali Ston. With more time, climb the walls of Ston, drive the wine villages of Pelješac, or head north to the Neretva delta for a flat-bottomed-boat safari.
