Pelješac Vineyards

The Pelješac peninsula is one of the great red-wine regions of the Mediterranean, the home of Plavac Mali — a thick-skinned grape that produces some of Croatia's most ambitious wines. From Komarna, an hour's drive across the bridge brings you to the central wine villages of Potomje, Trstenik, and Janjina.

The classic loop takes in three or four cellars in a day. Saints Hills, Korta Katarina, Miloš, and Matuško are reliable larger producers with proper tasting rooms; smaller family wineries cluster around Potomje and welcome drop-ins. The Dingač tunnel, blasted through the mountain in 1979 to give the Dingač vineyard road access, is worth the detour for its own sake.

A story
Pelješac is the heart of Dalmatian red-wine country. The Dingač vineyard, on the southern slope of the peninsula between Trstenik and Potomje, is the most prized — its near-vertical terraces, baked by the sun and reflected by the sea, were the first Croatian wine region to receive protected origin status, in 1961.
