The Neretva river meets the sea twenty kilometres north of Komarna, in a vast flat delta of channels, lagoons, and reed beds — a startling contrast to the karst landscape that dominates the rest of the Dalmatian coast. The villages of the delta cultivate citrus, watermelons, and rice on the alluvial soil.
The classic visit is a "fotosafari" by traditional flat-bottomed boat (lađa) from Vid or Opuzen, lasting two to three hours and including a tasting of local specialities — frog risotto, eel, mandarin liqueur. Birdwatchers will want to be there at dawn. Several small operators run trips; book a day ahead from Komarna or Ploče.
