Opatija does the café culture of its Austro-Hungarian past rather well. Grand hotel terraces, seafront coffee bars, and the occasional old-fashioned kavana with marble tables and a newspaper rack give the town its most civilised face in the morning. The nightlife is livelier than the sedate daytime atmosphere suggests — there are clubs and a casino for those who want them, and the bars along the main street stay busy well past midnight in summer.
