Opatija is not a beach town in the usual Croatian sense — there are no long sandy bays here. The coast is rocky and steep, and most swimming is from concrete platforms and small pebble coves along the Lungomare. What the water lacks in sandy bottom it makes up for in clarity. The best beaches for families with children are a short bus or car ride south at Ičići and Ika, where small pebble beaches with shallow entry are sheltered and safe. Further south, Mošćenička Draga has the largest sandy beach on this stretch of coast.
