Immediately north of Opatija, Volosko is what the resort looked like before the grand hotels arrived: a tight knot of old stone fishermen's houses climbing from a small harbour, with narrow lanes barely wide enough for two people to pass. Today it is best known for its restaurants, which are among the finest on the Kvarner coast — the harbour is ringed with tables and the menus lean heavily on the morning's catch. Walk the twenty minutes from Opatija's centre along the Lungomare extension, or take the local bus. Worth coming for dinner even if you are staying elsewhere.
