Lovran

Lovran is the southernmost town on the Opatija Riviera, 8 km along the Lungomare from Opatija, and is arguably the most characterful of the Riviera settlements. It has its own compact medieval old town with a 14th-century church, painted frescoes, and stone towers from the Venetian period — considerably older than Opatija, which only began developing as a resort in the 1840s. Walking the Lungomare south from Opatija to Lovran takes about two hours and is one of the best walks on the Croatian coast.

In October, Lovran celebrates its chestnut harvest with the Marunada festival, when the old town fills with stalls selling roasted chestnuts, chestnut pasta, chestnut cake, and chestnut grappa. It is a genuinely local festival that has not been overtly commercialised and is well worth timing a visit around. Cherry season in June brings another crop of seasonal stalls. Lovran has its own good restaurants and a quieter atmosphere than Opatija.

A story
Lovran takes its name from the laurel trees (lovor in Croatian) that grow prolifically on the surrounding slopes — the same laurels that give the Lungomare its characteristic scent. The town is famous for its cherries (the variety sold as "Lovran cherries" throughout the region) and for its chestnut harvest in October, which is celebrated with a festival that has been running continuously since 1973.
