Carmen Sylva Forest Path

The Carmen Sylva forest path is a historic walking route through the woods above Opatija, offering shade, fresh air, and views over the Kvarner Gulf from a different angle than the Lungomare below. It runs roughly parallel to the coast through beech and oak forest on the lower slopes of Učka mountain, connecting Opatija with the neighbouring villages above. The path is well-marked and gentle, covering mostly flat or slightly undulating terrain.

It is less well-known than the Lungomare and therefore far less crowded — ideal for anyone who wants a quieter alternative to the seafront promenade. The forest is cool even in summer heat. The path is accessible from several points in the upper part of Opatija and from the Volosko end. Allow about an hour for the main section; longer routes connect onward towards Učka.

A story
The path was named after Carmen Sylva, the pen name of Elisabeth of Wied, Queen of Romania, who was a frequent guest at Opatija and a prolific writer. She is said to have walked this route regularly during her stays and wrote poetry in the forest above the town. The path was officially dedicated to her during her lifetime, a gesture unusual enough to mark how much the aristocratic visitor trade valued its royal patrons.
