Kolan

Kolan is a small inland village on the western side of Pag island, set back from the coast in the karst interior. It is one of the island's main sheep-farming settlements and the place most associated with the production of authentic paški sir — Pag sheep's cheese. Several local producers sell direct from family farms around Kolan, and buying cheese here rather than from a supermarket gives both a better product and a glimpse into the island's agricultural life.

The village itself is quiet and unassuming — a cluster of stone houses, some traditional architecture, a local church. Its interest lies more in what it represents (the agricultural heart of the island, the source of its most famous product) than in monuments to visit. If you want to understand Pag beyond the tourist layer of beaches and nightlife, an hour at Kolan and a conversation with a cheese producer is one of the most instructive stops on the island.
