The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat is a Franciscan monastery and pilgrimage church built around a chapel that, according to legend, briefly housed the Holy Family's home from Nazareth in the 13th century. Whether or not you take the legend literally, the site has been drawing pilgrims since the medieval period and the votive gallery — packed with offerings left by sailors and travellers — is one of the most atmospheric rooms in the region.
The church stands at the top of the Trsat Staircase and a few minutes' walk from Trsat Castle, so both can be visited together on the same climb. The cloister is peaceful, the views are wide, and on feast days the whole approach is crowded with pilgrims from across Croatia and beyond.
