Named after a giant figure from Istrian folklore, Veli Jože is one of the most reliable spots in the old town for traditional Istrian cooking without the tourist-trap pricing that plagues some of the harbour-front restaurants. The interior is warm and informal, with wooden furniture and old photographs on the walls.
The menu centres on Istrian standards: pljukanci pasta with truffle or game sauce, mixed seafood grills, lamb and polenta. The wine list focuses on Istrian producers. Service can be slow on busy nights but remains cheerful. A good choice if you want a proper sit-down meal without spending significantly.
