Agava

Stepped terrace restaurant on Tkalčićeva, Mediterranean menu

Agava occupies one of the prettiest sites in central Zagreb: a long stepped terrace climbing the slope above Tkalčićeva Street, with tables on three or four levels under the trees. The menu is broadly Mediterranean — pasta, risotto, grilled fish, steak — with one or two Croatian classics. The execution is reliable rather than thrilling, but the setting is unmatched, especially at dusk when the lights come on in the trees.

Best for a relaxed dinner outside in summer or a long lunch in autumn. The wine list features Istrian Malvazija and Slavonian Graševina by the glass. Reservations recommended; the bar at street level takes walk-ins.
