Letka Tu-104 Aeroplane Bar

Bar inside a grounded Soviet Tupolev Tu-104 jetliner

In a fenced patch of grass on the eastern edge of Olomouc sits a real Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-104 jetliner — one of the first commercial jets in the world — that has been a bar since the 1970s. The plane sits on its own undercarriage, propped up under the wings, and you climb in via a steel staircase to drink at small tables along the original fuselage.

It is not glamorous. The interior is a little battered, the menu is short, and the atmosphere is a strange mix of communist nostalgia, sci-fi, and pub. But the experience is genuinely unusual — there are very few bars in working aircraft anywhere, and this one has been here longer than almost any of them. Opening hours are seasonal and casual; check ahead.

A story
The Tu-104 was given to Olomouc's Aeroclub in 1974 after retiring from Czechoslovak Airlines and converted into a bar — pretty much the only way the Soviets allowed such a plane to be exported. The interior still has its original cockpit, and the cocktail menu is half ironic, half nostalgic for the days when this thing was a status symbol.
