Day Trips

Kroměříž, an hour south, has a fairy-tale Archbishop's palace, an early-Baroque pleasure garden, and a flower garden — all three together a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most rewarding side trips in Moravia.

Brno, the second city of Czechia, is a fast train away — modernist architecture (Villa Tugendhat, Bauhaus-era apartments), good restaurants, the Capuchin crypt with its mummified monks, and Brno's livelier nightlife. Bouzov Castle north of the city is a romantic 19th-century reconstruction of a medieval stronghold; Helfštýn is a more authentic ruin set above a quiet valley. Cheese lovers should make the short trip to Loštice, home of Olomoucké tvarůžky and a small museum dedicated to the pungent local cheese.
