Civil Defence Bunker

Cold War bunker turned museum of the communist era

The Kryt Civilní Ochrany, a Cold War atomic bunker tucked under the streets of central Olomouc, has been preserved as a small museum of the communist era. The deep underground rooms, with their thick steel doors, painted ventilation pipes, and racks of gas masks, look exactly as they did in the 1980s.

Guided tours (Czech and English) take you through dormitories, mess rooms, and a control room with bakelite phones and propaganda posters. The displays cover daily life under the regime, the secret police, censorship, and the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion. It is a sober, well-curated counterweight to the prettier Baroque-and-Gothic version of Czech history found on the surface above.

A story
The bunker was built in the 1950s to shelter several hundred party officials and civil servants in the event of a nuclear attack. Hidden under the headquarters of the local communist party, it kept its filters and ventilators in working order until 1989 — and was opened to the public, more or less unchanged, only in the late 1990s.
