The upper main square is the centre of Olomouc — a large, slightly sloping space ringed by pastel-painted burgher houses and dominated by the gold-and-stone bulk of the Holy Trinity Column. The Renaissance town hall stands at its heart, with the Astronomical Clock set into its north wall and a soaring tower visitors can climb for views over the old town.
The square is busy with markets, concerts, Christmas stalls, and the inevitable terraces of bars and cafés. Two of the city's Baroque fountains — Caesar and Hercules — sit on its corners. Half a day can be spent just sitting and watching the square live its life.
