A neoclassical octagonal chapel set in the small park between the old town and the cathedral hill, the Mausoleum of Yugoslav Soldiers contains the remains of around 1,200 South Slav soldiers — Serbs, Croats and Slovenes — who died in the Austro-Hungarian armies during the First World War and the immediate aftermath.
The building was completed in 1926. It is a quiet, slightly melancholy spot, much overlooked by visitors. The interior, when open, contains the sarcophagi and an inscription in Cyrillic and Latin script. Even from outside, the colonnade and small surrounding garden are worth a brief pause on the walk between Horní náměstí and the cathedral.
