Zwinger Gardens

Quiet park along the former city ramparts

The Zwinger Gardens (Bezručovy sady) are the green belt along the eastern side of the old town, laid out in the 19th century along the former defensive ramparts. The name 'zwinger' refers to the outer wall of the medieval fortifications; the artillery emplacements once here were turned into a public garden in the 1820s.

Today it's a quiet park with old trees, a small artificial cave, and a statue or two — the kind of place locals walk to between work and dinner. The neighbouring Mlýnský potok stream is good for a slow stroll, and the Smetana and Čechovy sady parks continue the green belt north and west.
