Aarhus Theatre

The Aarhus Theatre is the largest provincial theatre in Denmark and one of the more extravagant Jugendstil buildings in Scandinavia. Completed in 1900 and designed by Hack Kampmann, its facade is a riot of carved dragons, allegorical figures, and decorative tile — part fairy-tale castle, part civic monument. The interior, designed in the same spirit, is equally ornate.

The theatre stages a full programme of drama, opera, and dance throughout the season. Even if you're not attending a performance, the facade is worth a look from the outside; it sits on a square at the eastern edge of the Latin Quarter, five minutes' walk from the cathedral.
