Ærø is one of the best cycling islands in Scandinavia. The terrain is gently rolling, the roads are quiet, and the distances are short enough that a full circuit — about 80 km — is achievable in a day at a comfortable pace. Bikes are available for rent in Ærøskøbing and at the ferry terminals.
The most scenic route runs along the southern coast, where the views open across the sound toward the German island of Fehmarn. The northern coast is quieter and more rural. The island's renewable energy infrastructure — wind turbines and the solar heating system in Marstal — is visible throughout and gives the ride an unexpectedly modern flavour. Pack a lunch; villages are small and some have no cafe.
