Cycling in Copenhagen

Copenhagen has the world's most functional urban cycling infrastructure. Around 62 percent of residents commute to work or school by bicycle every day — not as a lifestyle statement but as the most convenient way to get around. The city has over 400 kilometres of dedicated cycle lanes, and the traffic system is designed to prioritise bicycles over cars.

Renting a bike for a day is the best way to see Copenhagen. The harbour bridges, Frederiksberg Gardens, Nørrebro, and the Meatpacking District all connect naturally by bicycle in a way that doesn't quite work on foot or by metro. The Cykelslangen (the Bicycle Snake) — an elevated orange tube of a cycle path over the harbour near Fisketorvet — is worth riding just as an object. Most hotels and hostels rent bikes or can direct you to a rental shop.
