Esbjerg Art Museum

Twentieth-century Danish painting and sculpture in a converted custom house

Esbjerg Kunstmuseum holds one of Denmark's better regional collections of twentieth-century art, with strong showings of the COBRA painters (Asger Jorn, Carl-Henning Pedersen) and a long line of post-war Danish concretists and conceptualists. The museum is independently funded — unusual in Denmark, where most art museums are state-supported — and the curatorial style is correspondingly idiosyncratic, with rotating thematic hangs rather than a fixed chronological gallery.

The building itself is a piece of the city's history: a stripped-classical 1930s office block that was substantially extended by the local architects Aart in the early 2000s. Combine a visit with a stop at the neighbouring Esbjerg Museum and the Performing Arts Centre — all three are within a couple of minutes' walk of the central square.
