Church of Our Saviour

Esbjerg's redbrick neo-Gothic main church, completed 1887

The Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke) is the larger and more imposing of central Esbjerg's two main churches, completed in 1887 in red brick with neo-Gothic detailing. The architect, Ludvig Knudsen, gave the building a tall, slim tower visible from most of the central streets — useful for navigation on a flat town plan that can otherwise feel anonymous.

The interior is plainer than the exterior suggests: whitewashed walls, dark wooden pews, and a high pulpit with painted panels. The altar painting, by Niels Anker Lund, shows the Resurrection in muted Nordic light. Look up at the choir gallery for the unusual ship model hanging from the ceiling, a votive offering from local fishermen and a common feature in Danish maritime parishes.
