Bangsbo Fort is the German Wehrmacht artillery battery and bunker complex built into the hills south of Frederikshavn during the 1940s occupation. The site is one of the best-preserved sections of the Atlantic Wall in Denmark, with seven 15 cm guns, bunkers connected by underground tunnels, range-finders, anti-aircraft positions, and an observation post still in place.
A small exhibition inside one of the bunkers tells the story of the occupation and of the daily life of the soldiers who manned the position. The fort is part of the Bangsbo Museum complex, but can be visited independently on a walk up from town. The setting in pine forest above the sea is beautiful in itself, regardless of the heavy history embedded in the concrete.
