The twin towers of Roskilde Cathedral can be climbed via a narrow internal staircase during summer opening hours, rewarding visitors with a panoramic view across the town, the fjord, and the flat agricultural landscape stretching in all directions. The towers are 19th-century neo-Gothic additions to the original Romanesque and Gothic structure below, and from the top you can trace the rooflines of the medieval town clearly.
The climb is not for those uncomfortable with narrow spiral staircases — the passage is tight and steep. But the view from the top justifies the effort, and on a clear day you can see Copenhagen's church spires across the water to the east. The guide at the tower entrance can explain the architectural history of each visible landmark.
