Stændertorvet

Stændertorvet is the main square in Roskilde, a compact market space lined with low buildings that gives the town its practical centre. The square has been the focal point of the town since the Middle Ages, and a Saturday market still fills it most weeks. The town hall faces onto it, and the view from the square toward the cathedral towers — which are never quite hidden from any angle in the old centre — gives you a good feel for how thoroughly the church dominated medieval Roskilde.

The square is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, making it the natural place for a coffee or lunch break between the two main sights. In December it hosts a Christmas market that draws visitors from Copenhagen.
