Kabli

Quiet Pärnu Bay village with a long sandy beach and major Baltic bird migration views.

Kabli is a quiet coastal village on Pärnu Bay in southwest Estonia, known for its long sandy beach and as one of the best birdwatching spots in the Baltics. The beach stretches for several kilometres — shallow, sandy, and uncrowded even in summer.

Twice a year, in May and again in October, tens of thousands of migratory birds pass through, and the observation tower on the shore gives a grandstand view. The autumn migration is particularly spectacular, with geese, cranes, and waders passing in huge numbers. Kabli is part of the Pärnu Bay Important Bird Area and attracts serious birdwatchers from across northern Europe.

Getting There

Kabli sits on the main coastal road (E67) between Pärnu and Riga, about 60 km south of Pärnu and 110 km north of Riga. The drive from either direction is straightforward and fast — flat, well-paved, with light traffic outside summer weekends. Buses on the Riga–Pärnu–Tallinn line stop at Kabli several times a day, taking about an hour and a quarter from Pärnu or three from Riga.

The nearest airport is Pärnu Airport, which has only seasonal small-aircraft service. Most visitors fly into Tallinn or Riga and drive or bus down. Once in Kabli, getting around is on foot or by bike — distances within the village are small, and the bird station, beach, and museum can all be reached without a car.

Things to Do

Kabli is essentially a beach village with a serious birdwatching reputation. The long sandy beach runs for several kilometres along Pärnu Bay; the Kabli Bird Station and observation tower draws ornithologists from across northern Europe twice a year during the spring and autumn migrations; the small Kabli Nature Reserve preserves a stretch of meadow and coastal pine forest. The village itself has a tiny ethnographic museum in an old captain's house — a holdover from the era when Kabli was a serious shipbuilding centre.
