St Nicholas Orthodox Church

The little wooden church at Linaküla is the spiritual centre of the island. Kihnu converted from Lutheranism to Russian Orthodoxy in the 1840s during a wave of conversions across western Estonia driven by promises of land and food. The church was built in 1784 and rebuilt in 1899 after a fire. The interior has a simple iconostasis and the smell of beeswax candles.

Services are still held in Estonian rather than Church Slavonic, and most of the island's funerals and weddings take place here. Visitors are welcome outside service times; dress modestly and women cover their heads at services.
