Angla Windmill Hill

Five traditional windmills on a ridge near Leisi — the only surviving windmill hill in Estonia

About 40 kilometres north of Kuressaare, near the village of Leisi, Angla windmill hill preserves the only windmill grouping in Estonia that still looks as it once did. Five mills stand together on a low ridge: four are traditional trestle windmills, the type once common across Saaremaa, and one is a Dutch-style tower mill built in 1927. At their peak there were nine mills on this hill; the five that remain are in various states of preservation and open for viewing.

The hill itself is modest, but the sight of the windmills against an open sky — particularly in autumn or in the flat light of a summer evening — is striking. The heritage centre beside the mills explains the agricultural history of the area and the mechanics of the different mill types. This is a sensible pairing with the Kaali crater: both are about 40 kilometres from Kuressaare and can be combined into a half-day loop by car.
