Summer (June to August) is when Saaremaa is most accessible and the island most alive. The spa hotels are busiest, the days are long, and the coastal meadows are in flower. The island hosts the Saaremaa Opera Days festival in August, an outdoor event in the castle grounds that draws audiences from across Estonia.
Shoulder season in May and September offers quieter travel and lower prices. The island in autumn has a particular quality — emptied of summer visitors, the coastline and the forests feel genuinely remote. Winter is cold and dark but the castle and the spa culture remain: Estonians treat a dolomite-mud treatment as a reasonable reason to travel in February.
