Kreenholm is Narva's great industrial monument: a huge nineteenth-century textile complex of red brick, towers, workshops, and workers' housing spread around the river island and former waterfall. At its height it was among the largest textile factories in the Russian Empire and employed thousands of workers. Even semi-derelict, it has enormous presence.
Access to the factory interior is controlled, so the best way to understand it is on a guided tour when one is available. Otherwise, walk the surrounding district and look at the scale from the outside. The Narva River here feels less like a scenic border and more like raw power that someone tried to turn into cloth.
