Cycling the Åland Archipelago

The Åland archipelago is best explored by bicycle. Mariehamn is the hub, and five bus routes connect to the free inter-island ferries that enable travel to the outer islands. The cycling routes are well marked, the terrain is flat to gently rolling, and the free ferries make island-hopping logistically simple. Hire a bicycle in Mariehamn (several shops near the harbours) and plan a route using the tourist office map.

A popular two-day route from Mariehamn takes in Lemland, Lumparland, Föglö, and back — a circuit of around 80 km with multiple ferry crossings. The landscape along the way is classic Baltic archipelago: rocky shores, birch and pine, small farms, and occasional medieval churches. Farm cafés (lanthandel) serve coffee, pastries, and lunch along most routes. This is one of the best ways to spend two or three days in Åland.

A story
The free inter-island ferries that connect the outer Åland islands have no equivalent anywhere else in Finland. They are operated by the Åland government as a public service — free of charge, running on fixed schedules throughout the day — because the dispersed island population cannot practically be served by roads. Cyclists bring their bikes aboard and ride from island to island, stopping at farm cafés, historic churches, and viewpoints that are inaccessible without a bicycle. The result is one of the best cycling experiences in northern Europe.
