Karnakoski Fortress

Karnakoski Fortress was built in the 1790s as part of the Russian defensive system protecting the approaches to Saint Petersburg. It also served the Russian Saimaa fleet before being abandoned in the 19th century.

The earthworks and stone remains are modest but atmospheric, especially for travellers exploring the Lappeenranta countryside by car. It pairs naturally with other Saimaa-area military and lake-history stops.
