Reindeer safaris are one of the most characteristically Finnish experiences available around Rovaniemi, and they are better than you might expect from a tourist activity. A reindeer-drawn sleigh moving through a silent birch forest in midwinter, with snow falling and temperatures at minus twenty, is genuinely atmospheric rather than merely photogenic. Many farms combine the sleigh experience with a visit to see how the animals are fed and handled, and some offer a chance to learn to drive the sleigh yourself.
Several farms operate within 20 to 40 kilometres of Rovaniemi, and most can arrange transport from the city centre. Half-day programmes are the most common format and include warm drinks and sometimes a meal in a traditional Sami laavu (lavvu tent) around an open fire. Book in advance in December and January, when demand outstrips availability. In summer, the same farms offer visits to see reindeer in their natural state and can arrange walking safaris through the forest — a very different experience from the winter version, but the animals are present year-round.
