St Catherine's Church

Medieval stone church in Turku's old Nummi district, quieter than the city center.

St Catherine's Church is one of Turku's oldest surviving parish churches, a medieval stone building in the Nummi district east of the center. It does not compete with Turku Cathedral for scale, but that is part of its charm.

Inside and around the church, the mood is plain, Lutheran, and local. It is worth the detour for travelers interested in Finland's medieval layers, especially if you are walking or cycling beyond the riverside sights.
