The Grands Montets cable cars climb from Argentière into one of the sternest corners of the Chamonix valley. Even when you are not skiing, the ride is about scale: dark rock, glacier ice, and the upper Aiguille Verte massif crowding the horizon in a way that feels less polished than the Aiguille du Midi.
In winter this is expert country, with steep pistes and famous off-piste routes that should be treated with respect. In summer, the lifts are useful for walkers who want a fast route into high alpine scenery. Check operating status before building a day around it, as weather and lift works can change plans quickly in this part of the valley.
